U-12 girls win provincial ringette bronze
The Markham Provincial Petite U-12 girls ringette team captured the bronze medal over the March break in the Provincial "A" Ringette Championship in North Bay, the birthplace of the sport.
The team played a six-game round robin, going 5-1. They defeated Gloucester 3-0, Ottawa 9-2, Whitby 6-1, Ajax 3-2 and Mitchell 6-5 with Meg Casbourn scoring the winning goal with 1:10 left in the first period of overtime.
Markham advanced to the semifinals against Gloucester, losing 6-5 in overtime. They then played Mitchell for the bronze.
Playing their eighth game in four days, including their two overtime matches, the team left everything on the ice Sunday, winning 4-3, with Emily Braithwaite scoring the winning goal late in the second period.
Great goaltending by Christina Mongillo and terrific defensive play by Alex Serroul, Michela Roman and Melanie Taylor helped preserve the win.
Strong offense from Lauryn Hobson and Alexx Barranger was also key.
The team consisted of Emily Braithwaite, Meg Casbourn, Lauryn Hobson, Alexx Barranger, Alex Serroul, Fiona Powley, Melanie Taylor, Michela Roman, Claire Renaud, Francesca Campisi, and Christina Mongillo, assistant coaches Mike Hobson and Tony Mongillo, manager Kaitlyn Casbourn and head coach Bruce Casbourn.
